Daron Acemoglu: From Istanbul to the World Stage with a Nobel Prize

In a historic achievement, Daron Acemoglu, a Turkish economist renowned for his work in political economy, has been awarded the Nobel Prize. Born and raised in Istanbul, Acemoğlu has earned this academic recognition as a tribute to his years-long quest to understand how institutions shape economic and social outcomes.

Acemoglu joins a prestigious list of Nobel acclaimed with Turkish roots, becoming the third Turkish-born scientist to receive this esteemed award. Prior to him, Aziz Sancar, in 2015, in the field of chemistry and Orhan Pamuk, in 2006, in the field of literature had also brought global recognition to Turkey with their groundbreaking contributions in their respective fields.

Acemoglu’s work has focused on the deep-rooted connections between political power, economics, and prosperity. His influential research, particularly on the relationship between economic institutions and inequality, has reshaped how we think about development and governance around the world. His book Why Nations Fail, co-authored with James A. Robinson, remains a fundamental text for students and academics.

As one of the most cited economists globally, Acemoglu’s Nobel Prize not only highlights his personal achievements but also brings pride to Turkey, further sealing the country’s reputation in the global academic community.
